Fruit — A Sweet Treat to Eat
Have you ever come home tired and thirsty after riding your bike on a hot summer's day? Maybe you drank a big glass of water and then looked around for something to eat. If you were lucky, you might have found a ripe peach or plum in the refrigerator or on the counter. A good piece of ripe fruit is sweet and juicy — a delicious snack.
Usually, when people speak of "fruit" trees, they are talking about tress that they grow mostly because they like the fruit, but actually, all trees that have flowers have fruit. The fruit is the part of the flowering tree that holds the seed. When the fruit is soft and wet, like a plum or an apple, people actually call it "a fruit". When a fruit is dry and hard, however, it is sometimes called "a nut". Cashews and pecans are examples of this kind of fruit. Of course, some fruits that people eat do not grow on trees at all, but on bushes or vines.
In addition to keeping the seed safe, fruit can help the tree to make more trees. Because fruit is colorful and juicy, it attracts birds and animals. They eat the fruit, but the hard seeds are not digested. The seeds go right through their intestines, fall to the ground and, if conditions are right, a new tree will grow.
