What are Bare-Root Fruit Trees?
Your tree is a "bare-root" fruit tree from a nursery in California's Central Valley. It is actually parts of two trees, which have been joined together near the base of the trunk by a process called grafting. Growers select the lower part (rootstock) and upper part (scion) to give the trees particular characteristics — to make it big or small, slow- or fast-growing, disease-resistant, cold-hardy or heat-tolerant, or quick to mature and bear fruit.
Wholesale growers dig bare root trees from the field and ship them during their winter rest period (dormancy)Domancy
A period of time when an organism suspends some biological functions and does not grow. Trees are dormant throughout the winter., before leaf and flower buds have begun spring growth. By this method of growing and marketing, growers make trees available at lower prices, since they avoid the expense of buying and transporting heavy containers filled with soil.
