You certainly can buy lots of different kinds of fruit in a grocery store. Usually the fruit in a grocery store comes from far away. It is grown on big farms that use machines to help the farmers grow it. It gets to the store in trucks, planes and trains. Most of the farms that grow grocery store fruit use seeds, fertilizerFertilizer

Substances added to soil or plants to promote growth. Fertilizers are either artificial (chemicals), or organic (manure, compost). Overuse of fertilizers can degrade soil and poison water supplies. and bug killerPesticide

Chemical poison used to kill unwanted animals. While pesticides may be effective in controlling unwanted animal populations, they often kill other animals as well. that comes from far away. These things get to the farms in trucks, planes and trains also. If you live far away from the store where your family buys fruit, you might use a car to get there. Every time someone uses a car, truck, plane, train, or other piece of machinery to make or move fruit, the fruit gets a little more expensive and a little more carbon dioxideCarbon Dioxide (CO2)

Harmful chemicals and contaminants released into the atmosphere and the water, primarily as a result of human activity. gets into the air. If the food which you eat is made closer to where you live, fewer machines are used so the fruit is less expensive and the air stays cleaner.

People who live in cities or in the suburbs, like we do, do not have enough land to grow much food at home, so they will buy most of their food at a store. But, if you have a yard which is sunny, and some water and lots of patience, you can grow some of your own fruit yourself.
